My first spoken word was "Car", and if you ask my wife, every 3rd or 4th word still has something to do with a powered machine, especially motorcycles!
I wasn't fortunate enough to be able to ride until I joined the Army in 1993, when I bought a Honda Nighthawk and proceed to ride all over Germany with it. Once I returned stateside, I picked up a Honda VFR800, and by a stroke of what I can only describe as fate, met my good friend Rick who was a "well-seasoned"rider and had raced for many years. He took me under his wing and opened my eyes to what REAL motorcycling was all about. To paraphrase Keith Code: "Cornering - Discover the art". In 2000, Rick brought me to my first trackday, at the recently re-opened Virginia International Raceway in Danville, VA. Needless to say, I was HOOKED! I'd been on track before in a car, but on a bike, that was a whole different animal, and it was so very "right".
Some unfortunate circumstances a few years later forced me to go without a motorcycle, but in 2006, I was able to re-enter the fold with a machine I had lusted over for years, an Aprilia RSV Mille. Just a few months after buying it, I was back where I was happiest - on the track.
2008 brought some life changes when I moved to Pennsylvania from North Carolina. It was here that my passion for the craft of motorcycling went from merely a hobby, to a full-blown obsession. I met some like-minded individuals and formed KeystoneRiders.com in 2010 as a way to unite those who shared the same passions. Around that same time, I started doing track days with increasing regularity. The track bug had bitten.. harder this time!
Thanks to my friends at KeystoneRiders and TPM, I started getting more serious about my riding, converting the Mille into a track-only machine and attending many more events. In 2013, I completed levels 1&2 of the California Superbike School. In 2014, I attended Aaron Stevenson's Cornerspin school, trying to break from a plateau I seemed to be hitting. (It worked!)
Later in May of '14, a good friend twisted my arm to take a race school, to compete in TPM's GPMoto Club race series , and I'm glad he did. As much as I enjoyed track days, racing was a whole other level! I competed in 4 races that year, finishing 7th overall in Superbike, aboard the now 14 year old Mille.
My wife asked me "What do you want for your 40th birthday?" several times that year, and after a 7th and 6th in my first 2 races aboard a 14 year old bike, the answer was obvious- "I want to race, on a current bike, set up well". She agreed, a machine was sourced, and the "tiger bike" was born! Racing went well in 2015, taking home numerous podiums, earning top 5 overall in all 4 classes I raced, including a championship.
For 2016 and beyond, I've earned "Expert" status and will be competing against some of the fastest club racers in the country! I'm also giving back to the sport I love so much by coaching for the EvolveGT track day organization, to help riders of all levels improve their skills!
I'm easy to find in the pits or on-track, on the orange & black "tiger bike"! Come cheer us on, or even just stop by in the pits and say hi, I'd like to meet you!
